Space Motor

About the Project

A satellite in space

Drive13 is developing a new generation of high-precision electric motion technology for space applications.

The ambition is to create technologies that can support future European space missions where accurate motion is mission-critical.

The Challenge: Space changes the rules

Diagram showing three types of Earth orbits and their altitudes: Low Earth Orbit (LEO) ranging from 500 km to 2,000 km, Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) from approximately 2,000 km to 20,000 km, and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) at about 35,786 km, with illustrations of satellites in each orbit.

Electric motors designed for Earth cannot simply be transferred into orbit. Space introduces fundamentally different challenges based on their altitude and earth orbit location.

The project addresses these challenges through a mission-oriented approach focused on:

- Reliability & Thermal management

-Lightweight and compact integration

- High-precision

- Mission-specific customization

- Material Engineering for future space qualification and industrialization

Objectives & Goals

a display with multiple posters about space and science, including rockets and satellites

The project aims to translate Drive13's electric-motor know-how into a new space-qualified product.

Our key goals are to:

  • Adapt electric-drive technology to the extreme conditions of orbital operation

  • Enable customized solutions for different missions and payloads

  • Reduce technical risks for future space systems

  • Validate the technology through design, prototyping and testing

  • Establish a pathway toward space qualification and commercial deployment

  • Strengthen Drive13's position within the European space ecosystem

Consortium & Industrial Advisory Board

Drive13 leads the project, supported by an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) bringing together key ecosystem space actors.

The IAB represents complementary expertise across the relevant space value chain, from technology development and payloads to system integration, testing and industrialization.

The participating companies and institutions are active in diverse and complementary sectors, enabling open, non-competitive interaction and knowledge exchange.
