Group of diverse professionals in AM4EM consortium

AM4EM

Additive Manufacturing for Electrical Machines (AM4EM):

AM4EM is a joint, ambitious research project by Ghent University, KU Leuven, and VITO, on the application of 3D-printing (Additive Manufacturing) to improve the performance of Electrical Machines

3D printed objects including heat sinks, stacked ceramic parts, a red nozzle printing, and copper parts. Also features logos of Ghent University, KU Leuven, AM4EM, FWO, and VITO, indicating a collaborative engineering or manufacturing project.

Scope:

The project aims at integrating additively manufactured (AM) parts in the electromagnetic path of a machine: windings or elements of the stator/rotor core. To do so, there is a need for AM processes that are able to print multi-materials (MM).

It involves combining the following materials in complex geometries: electrically conductive materials for guiding the current, magnetically conductive materials for guiding the magnetic flux and electrically isolating materials.

The Project Consortium

The main objective is to move the technology readiness level from TRL 2 to 4, by increasing the power density of electric machines by 40% and the energy efficiency by 5% by using multi-material additive manufacturing.

A collection of automotive and industrial company logos, including Aurubis, AMNOVIS, Elnor Motors, ESMA, Magnax, Maintenance Partners, NiniX Technologies, Aerosint, ArcelorMittal, Ocas, Valcun, and Van Loock Motoren.

The project involves all key research groups in Flanders active in the field, i.e., the Ghent University (UGent), KU Leuven (KUL) and VITO, with long complementary expertise along the entire AM4EM process chain.

The project is guided by an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) involving 14 main ecosystem actors. The IAB composition covers all relevant parts of the value chain(s). These companies are active in diverse sectors ensuring non-competitive and open interactions.
